Pregnancy and Postnatal Physiotherapy

Pregnancy can cause changes to posture, the pelvic floor, and the musculoskeletal system. Women’s health physiotherapy supports:

  • Managing pelvic and back pain during pregnancy
  • Improving posture and core stability
  • Preparing for labour
  • Postnatal rehabilitation of the pelvic floor and abdominal muscles
  • Recovery from caesarean or episiotomy
  • Guidance on safe return to exercise

These services help women recover faster, regain strength, and prevent complications like incontinence or prolapse. Tailored exercise programmes also support energy levels, reduce fatigue, and maintain overall fitness during this life stage.

Pelvic Floor Health and Rehabilitation

The pelvic floor plays a vital role in bladder, bowel, sexual, and core stability. Our physiotherapists provide:

  • Pelvic floor assessments
  • Tailored exercise programmes
  • Biofeedback and manual therapy when needed
  • Advice on bladder, bowel, and core function

Strengthening and restoring the pelvic floor can improve daily function, reduce pain, and enhance quality of life. Many women are surprised how targeted physiotherapy can resolve symptoms that have persisted for years.

Musculoskeletal Health for Women

Women’s health physiotherapy also addresses musculoskeletal issues that often accompany life stages such as pregnancy, postnatal recovery, menopause, or ageing. Our assessments and treatments include:

  • Posture and alignment correction
  • Joint mobility and flexibility improvement
  • Strengthening exercises for core and lower back
  • Pain relief for chronic conditions, arthritis, or repetitive strain

This holistic approach ensures your body functions optimally and reduces the risk of injury while improving comfort and mobility.

Exercise and Lifestyle Guidance

We provide personalised guidance to support long-term wellness:

  • Safe exercises for pelvic and core strength
  • Activity modification during pregnancy or postnatal recovery
  • Advice on ergonomics, lifting, and posture
  • Education on healthy lifestyle habits to support women’s health

Lifestyle factors such as nutrition, sleep, and physical activity can profoundly influence recovery, pelvic floor strength, and overall wellbeing. Our team provides practical, realistic strategies tailored to your life.

Education, Empowerment, and Long-Term Health

At PhysioReform, we don’t just treat symptoms — we empower women with knowledge and confidence. Understanding your body, recognising early signs of dysfunction, and knowing how to manage changes allows you to take control of your health.

We can also signpost trusted services including gynaecologists, dietitians, or mental health specialists for comprehensive support. This collaborative approach ensures that women receive holistic, multi-disciplinary care.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is women's health physiotherapy?

Women’s health physiotherapy is a specialised area of practice addressing pelvic floor dysfunction, urinary incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, pelvic pain, and pregnancy or postnatal recovery. It combines pelvic floor assessment, manual therapy, exercise rehabilitation and education, delivered by clinicians with additional training recognised by POGP. Fara Sonday leads this service with over twenty years of specialist experience.

What happens at a first women's health appointment?

Your first appointment involves a detailed discussion of your symptoms, medical, gynaecological and obstetric history, and treatment goals, followed by a physical assessment that may include external and, with your consent, internal examination of pelvic floor function. Your clinician explains each step beforehand, and treatment is always adapted to your comfort and preferences throughout.

Do I need a GP referral to book?

No, a GP referral isn’t required to book a women’s health physiotherapy appointment; you can self-refer directly. However, sharing relevant medical history, medication and any previous investigations or diagnoses helps your physiotherapist plan safe, effective treatment. If your symptoms suggest a condition needing further medical investigation, you’ll be advised to see your GP.

Is an internal examination always part of the assessment?

No, an internal examination isn’t always required and only takes place with your full understanding and explicit consent. Many aspects of pelvic floor function can be assessed through external observation, breathing patterns and movement testing. Where internal assessment would meaningfully guide treatment, following Pelvic Floor Society practice standards, your clinician will explain why beforehand.

What conditions does women's health physiotherapy treat?

Women’s health physiotherapy treats urinary and faecal incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, pelvic pain, pregnancy-related pain, diastasis recti, and postnatal recovery, alongside menopause-related symptoms and pre and post-gynaecological surgery rehabilitation. Treatment is individualised, combining pelvic floor rehabilitation, manual therapy and exercise, available at our Bloomsbury clinic just off Tottenham Court Road.

Fara is a fantastic physio. She is knowledgeable, informative and patient. I was seeing her for several months after a horrible ankle injury and surgery. Even after my 1st session my walking (and confidence) improved and all these months later I’m back doing everything I want to. She even made my recovery process fun!

Fara was recommended to me by my spine surgeon back in 2017, and I have been seeing her regularly for 9 years. I am happy to say I’ve been 100% painfree since my microdiscettomy operation, thanks to a combination of reformer Pilates and Fara’s top treatment of my back, with physiomassage and updated exercises. She always checks my progress and keeps me monitored, adjusting treatment as required. I have degenerative disk disease, and so am especially grateful to Fara for my improvement, and for being fully active and painfree all these years. She is moreover completely reliable, honest and courteous, a pleasure to work with and totally professional. I am happy to recommend her without hesitation — thank you Fara!

I have been receiving physiotherapy treatment for a shoulder issue and have been extremely impressed with the care and expertise provided. From the initial assessment through to the ongoing sessions, Farhana has been thorough, knowledgeable, and attentive to detail. She took time to explain the nature of the problem clearly and provided a treatment plan that addressed both the symptoms and the underlying causes. The exercises prescribed were practical and manageable, and I have noticed a significant improvement in both mobility and strength. Thank You!
